Everyday is great. Today was a great day, but definitely not the best day of my life. I felt like I did everything as well as I could, but things just didn’t turn out quite right, and I couldn’t blame anyone else in this world but me. So, at the end of the day, I just wanted to make myself feel better by studying as hard as I can, hoping that things would turn out right the next time.

I totally understand that life wouldn’t always turn out as I expected it to. So, instead of tearing people down, I just put my energy into something positive. I kind of took the picture by myself (totally amateur and I know it’s not so neat).

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is just two hours away!

This Chinese New Year’s Eve, together with my family, I went to the mall, ate at a restaurant, and went shopping daily stuffs at the market.

For tomorrow, I am going to stay at home to do my assignments. Pretty depressing? Not really. I am kind of used to these things, now that I have been in college for more than two years. As a hard-working student, I have to be satisfied to fill my public holiday with assignments.

Anyway, hopefully the world will not end this year, because I still have so many things that I want to do in my life. So, what will you do if this year is the last year of the earth?

Opinion: Reality Show

So, this post is about reality show. I wanted to show you mu opinion on it, because many of them are controversial, especially in my country Indonesia.

Do you like watching reality shows?

I personally enjoy them. A reality show is supposed to be real, but somehow many Indonesian reality shows look very-very fake. The storyline seems very illogical and weird, yet still fun to watch.

In your opinion, is it okay for a REAL-ity show to be FAKE?

Maybe some reality shows might be fake, but I think that is okay, because they are still entertaining, and people actually still buy into it too. Recently I watched Glee Project Season 1. It was a very cool show. It looks pretty real to me, but I don’t know, I don’t want to accuse anything. The most important thing for me is whether or not I like it.

Old Games

Today I was opening my old box, and I found my old psx cds inside the box. I still remembered when I was still in elementary school, I played psx. I bought the cds at a shop in supermall karawaci. I can’t remember the name of the shop, but I know the location of the shop. The place is now an entrance to e-center, the shop is totally gone.

Anyway, I looked at my cds and I wonder how much money I’ve spent for these cds. I found some interesting games like FF tactics, Hoshigami, and FFVIII. So, I decided to play FF tactics and FFVIII again on pc.

It seemed nostalgic for me to be playing this games again. When I was little, I used to think that I have to play a lot, because I wouldn’t have enough time to play when I grew up. In fact, what I thought is totally true. I haven’t graduated from university, yet I have so little time to play. I haven’t even started the REAL life yet, OMG!

I also remembered my commitment when I decided to stop playing and be focused on my study. Now, I am questioning myself. I love playing games so much. I love my dreams too. My dreams are a lot more important than my games, but it would be great if I can have them both. So, what do you think, is it appropriate for an adult to play games? Games are created to entertain right? Every human needs entertainments right? Is game an appropriate entertainment for adults? Or is it only appropriate for children?

Regardless of the answers, I will still hold on to my old commitment. I will not play games when I should study. I need to get focused on my dreams. These old games are good, only for nostalgia.

The Worst Feelings

This post is inspired by Bubzbeauty’s post about The BEST Little Feelings in The World. I am going to write my version of the worst feelings in the world. I know that there are a lot of worst feelings and I can’t mention all of them, so I am just going to mention some of them.

The first worst feeling is loneliness. People says that a lonely man is a poor man. I think this statement is true. No human should live alone, because we can’t. We need other people. Lonely people usually try to get people’s attention. One example is telling unnecessary stories through social networking site, e.g. Facebook.

The second is boredom. This might sound silly, but people hate being bored. People have to find some activities they like and get some entertainments. This is also a string reason why the entertainment industry is very important. Bored people on the internet would sit in front of their laptops staring at their homepages, thinking about what they should do on the internet. They want to do something productive or fun. They might end up finding bored.com.

The third is failure. Have you ever worked your ass so hard to do something important in your life, and all of your efforts go to waste because you don’t get the results that you’ve expected? For people who are competitive and achiever oriented, this feeling might get them into deep depression. Some others might learn from their failures and work harder though.

The fourth is anger. When someone feels angry, he feels like he is having a big lump in his chest that he can’t throw it out. He might want to punch someone in the face or maybe kill someone. The worst thing about being angry is he can’t sleep at night. Anger is biologically unhealthy.

The fifth is sickness. Everybody wants to be healthy. Health is not everything, but without health, everything is nothing. Sickness often prevents people from doing things that they like. Sickness makes people’s uncomfortable. Therefore people should take good care of themselves, and avoid getting sick as much as possible.

So, these are five worst feelings according to me, LOL. As I said earlier, I know that there are a lot of other worst feelings and I can’t mention all of them. If you are experiencing any of those feelings right now, you should cheer up because life is not over yet. If you feel like hitting rock bottom, you should be happy that you can’t get any lower than that, you can only go up.

Book

Okay, this post is silly. About two months ago I went to a bookstore in a mall. I was not looking for anything, just browsing things. Then I saw a very interesting book. The cover’s color is my favorite: green. I fell in love with the book. I was love at first sight! So I bought the book for about IDR 25000, which is quite expensive for a blank book. I took it home and excitedly opened it for the first time. I wrote my name on it.

Right after I wrote my name on it, a problem came. I didn’t know what I should do with the book. Up until this moment, I am still very clueless with the book. I left it on my shelves, and now that the holiday is here, I want to use it for something!

What should I do with my blank book? I’m not an artistic person, I’m not good with drawing. I don’t want to use it as a diary. Should I draw on it anyway? I really don’t want to waste my money.

Survival Sleep

Sleeping is one of my hobbies. I feel like I can forget all of my problems for a while. I can recharge my energy. I strongly encourage people to make sleeping a hobby too because biologically it is an important activity. Promise me that you will make sleeping your hobby, and you will do this hobby every day (well, of course LOL).

My professor told me that human needs to sleep to survive. When I heard that information for the first time, I did not completely believe him. Animals get killed when they were asleep. People become vulnerable when they are sleeping. They become unresponsive to their surroundings. Sometimes people don’t realize that they move a lot while they were asleep. Some people can even walk while they are sleeping. Creepy! What I am trying to say is people lose control of their bodies when they are asleep. One time when I was watching television, I saw a man who hasn’t slept for a long time, and medical check-up couldn’t detect any abnormalities in his body. How can you say that sleeping is needed for survival?

Well, now I completely agree with my professor. Yes, sleep is definitely needed for survival. Why? One reason is to process our memory. Our brains are not the same with super-capacity-hard-disk-drives. We can’t memorize everything in the universe, yet we are bombarded with so much information every day. Our brain need to sort those information, store the important, discard the unimportant. Sleep is definitely needed for body’s balance, biologically termed homeostasis.

So, if you are currently sleep-deprived, I suggest you to sleep now, 8 hours for adults.

Scary Students

I got new experience in teaching today. I’ve taught elementary students, given a private lessons for a senior high school student, and today I taught general biotechnology to a class of senior high school students. It’s awesome.

I’m still so young and senior high school feels like just yesterday. I had the feeling that the students that I was going to teach would be scary, naughty, etc. But, everything turned out very well. They were very nice and accommodating, even funny.

I should really consider academician for my future career. Oh, but I still want to win the Nobel prize too. I guess I still have some time to decide then :)

Frog

Anatomy and physiology is such a great experience to me this semester! I caught my first ever frog from the soccer field, and also dissected it in the lab. I’m not going to show any vulgar pictures of decerebrated frogs, or frogs internal organs. I’m just so grateful that I can have this experience. So here are my frogs, all of them had died for experiments.

I love my frogs <3 but I don’t think I can be a veterinarian. I don’t kill frogs, even for experiments. I always asked my friends to kill them for me.

Anyway, I should thank them for giving me so much knowledge.

Burger is not my most favorite food, but recently I’ve fallen in love with REBEL burger. It’s so delicious and relatively cheap (IDR 7000).

Bioteknologi vs PRT

“Bekerja sebagai scientist di bidang bioteknologi di Indonesia bukan untuk mencari uang banyak, tetapi untuk memuaskan keingintahuan dan ambisi pribadi.”

Beberapa hari yang lalu, mami bercerita masalah pembantu rumah tangga. Salah satu tante saya baru saja memecat pembantun rumah tanggaya yang ketahuan mencuri makanan dan ketahuan merokok di dalam rumah. Tante saya kemudian mengembalikan pembantu rumah tangga tersebut ke yayasan, dan mempekerjakan pembantu rumah tangga yang baru.

Waktu itu mami saya berkata, “gila ya, pembantu rumah tangga yang baru itu digaji bersih sebesar 1 juta sebulan, karena kemampuannya dalam memasak.” Awalnya saya hanya terdiam sambil melanjutkan makan sore saya. Akan tetapi, saya mulai menyadari inti perkataan mami saya, bahwa gaji seorang pembantu rumah tangga bisa sebesar itu, hanya dengan kemampuan memasak. Mungkin bagi sebagian orang, gaji pembantu sebesar 1 juta sudah biasa dan wajar. Akan tetapi, saya melihat dari sisi yang berbeda. Saya membandingkan besarnya gaji pembantu dengan gaji scientist s1 bioteknologi.

Pernah suatu hari di semester lalu saya berbincang-bincang dengan dosen saya yang bekerja juga sebagai peneliti, tentang prospek kerja lulusan bioteknologi di Indonesia. Pembicaraan tersebut berlanjut hingga saya bertanya tentang gaji s1 lulusan bioteknologi di Indonesia. Waktu itu, dosen saya berkata bahwa fresh graduate lulusan bioteknologi s1 gajinya sekitar 1.2 juta. Saya merasa gaji itu tergolong kecil.

Ketika saya membandingkan gaji scientist dengan gaji pembantu ini, saya merasa pembantu sangat beruntung. Uang sebesar 1 juta bersih diperoleh per bulan, termasuk makan, dan tempat tinggal. Sedangkan bagi scientist, uang sebesar 1.2 juta kotor diperoleh, belum dipotong dengan uang makan, transportasi, tempat tinggal, dlsb. Kedua pekerjaan memiliki risiko dan tekanan kerja yang sama-sama beratnya (meskipun saya tidak tahu mana yang lebih berat). Ditambah lagi, menjadi scientist perlu menjalani studi selama 3.5 sampai 4 tahun di universitas dengan segala pelajaran yang sulit dan aktivitas laboratorium yang padat (seperti yang saya alami). Gerakan yang kami lakukan adalah gerakan yang membutuhkan learning dan skills seperti kerja aseptik, penggunaan alat laboratorium yang cenderung tidak bisa dilakukan orang-orang awam pada umumnya. Gerakan yang dilakukan pembantu adalah gerakan yang umumnya bisa dikerjakan orang dewasa sehat. Dengan parameter perbandingan yang tidak jelas ini, saya tetap merasa kasihan pada para scientist ini. Tidak heran banyak dari kami yang akhirnya memilih untuk hidup dan berkarya di negri lain, membangun negri mereka. Wajar saja, semua manusia pasti ingin memiliki hidup yang terjamin.

Lepas dari segala perbandingan yang saya sebutkan, saya sampai pada kesimpulan bahwa saya bekerja karena saya menyukai bidang yang saya kerjakan, bukan karena uang yang dihasilkan besar. Saya tidak ingin melakukan hal yang saya benci untuk mendapatkan uang. Terlebih lagi, kepuasan atas pemenuhan keingintahuan merupakan gaji yang besar. Konyol? Ya. Kenyataan? Tentu ya juga.

Analogi Tengah Semester

Tanpa terasa ujian tengah semester 5 sudah mendekat, minggu depan, 25-30 September 2011 akan menjadi medan pertempuran. Saya sendiri belum merasa siap menghadapi pertempuran ‘hidup mati’ ini.

‘Hidup mati’ bagi sebagian orang mungkin terkesan (sangat) berlebihan, tetapi bagi saya, yang sangat memperhatikan prestasi dan masa depan, pertempuran ini memang sangat menentukan ‘hidup mati’ perasaan saya. Saya pernah ‘sekarat’ karena tidak mengerjakan dengan baik, dan tidak mendapatkan hasil yang memuaskan.

Kembali ke topik, dalam pertempuran ini saya mau berjuang mati-matian (mungkin terasa klise karena saya berulang-ulang mengatakan hal yang sama) dan belajar intensif setiap hari. Musuh-musuh saya semester ini: anatomi fisiologi manusia, enzimologi, teknologi rekombinan DNA 2, metodologi penelitian, kultur jaringan hewan, leadership, dan iBT.

Sepertinya salah juga kalau saya meng-analogi-kan mata kuliah sebagai musuh-musuh saya, padahal saya seharusnya bersahabat karib dan memahami mereka. Tetapi sebagai musuh, saya harus menguasai mereka (menguasai bukan hal yang kita lakukan pada seorang teman kan?)

Ah, apalah artinya analogi, yang penting semangat tidak kendur.

Antusias

Hari ini adalah hari presentasi enzimologi mengenai penentuan struktur primer protein. Entah kenapa, saya merasa hari ini sangat ‘madesu’. Semalam saya sudah menyiapkan semua bahan presentasi dengan baik, harapannya supaya semua berjalan lancar.

Ketika saat presentasi tiba, salah seorang anggota kelompok saya tidak bisa hadir. Saya akhirnya harus mempresentasikan bagian yang seharusnya bukan menjadi bagian saya.

Sesi pertanyaan berjalan seperti biasanya, untungnya hampir semua pertanyaan bisa terjawab dengan baik.

Saya harus banyak berterima kasih pada Tuhan, segalanya berjalan dengan baik dan lancar, meskipun semangat saya mulai mengendur. Rasanya ada sedikit perasaan berdosa karena saya kurang antusias menghadapi tugas. Rasanya saya berada pada fase jenuh.

Di lain kesempatan saya akan berusaha untuk lebih antusias lagi.

Kemalasan yang saya miliki pastinya tidak akan menggerakan tangan Tuhan untuk menyelamatkan saya sekali lagi.

Professional Communication

Professional Communication adalah salah satu mata kuliah yang harus saya ambil semester ini. Tujuan pengambilan adalah supaya mahasiswa-mahasiswa biologi, seperti saya, yang erat dihubungkan dengan “laboratorium” dan bahkan dicap wajah laboratorium, bisa piawai berkomunikasi dan menyampaikan gagasan yang kita miliki tanpa terjadi miskomunikasi.

Salah satu tugas menarik yang saya dapatkan minggu ini adalah tugas untuk menginterview seseorang dari budaya yang jauh berbeda dengan budaya saya, untuk mengkontraskan budaya komunikasi yang ada. Sebagian besar kolega saya mencari target orang-orang Indonesia yang mudah ditemui, bahkan ada yang menginterview sesama mahasiswa, hanya saja asalnya dari daerah di luar Jakarta. Saya sendiri ingin melakukan sesuatu yang agak gila. Saya mau menginterview orang Nigeria yang seringkali berkeliaran di mall depan kampus.

Bersama dengan partner saya, kami menuju mall depan kampus seusai kuliah. Randomly melihat-lihat mall sambil menunggu seberkas cahaya Nigeria. Setelah cukup lama berputar-putar kami tidak menemukan target kami, tetapi kami menemukan seorang bapak-bapak yang berbicara dalam bahasa Jepang di telepon. Singkat cerita bapak-bapak tersebut menolak untuk diinterview. . .

Dengan terpaksa kami berputar-putar kembali, dan akhirnya kami menemukan orang Australia. Kami memutuskan menginterviewnya, tetapi dia tidak bisa memberikan banyak informasi yang kami inginkan, karena dia hanya bersedia diinterview selama 5 menit. Selesai interview, kami merasa tidak puas dengan hasil interview tersebut.

Saya mulai memutar otak untuk mencari jalan keluar pemenuhan tugas ini, mengingat di rumah masih banyak tugas-tugas lain yang menumpuk, dan tentunya saya mau beristirahat sejenak. Akhirnya kami memutuskan untuk melanjutkan pencarian yang sepertinya cukup suram ini.

Ketika kami menyerah dan memutuskan untuk pulang, kami akhirnya menemui seorang ibu-ibu India dengan seorang anaknya yang sedang berjalan santai. Saya sempat berpikir, “ini pasti kiriman Tuhan!” Kami menginterviewnya, dan senangnya, ia sangat antusias, bahkan saya harus dengan terpaksa memotong interview karena ceritanya benar-benar panjang lebar, dari masalah kasta hingga masalah budaya pernikahan di India. Senangnya hati, ia juga meninggalkan nomor telepon agar kami dapat bertanya-tanya lagi.

Lalu kami berfoto bersama, dan saya pulang dengan bahagia. Sekarang tinggal penyusunan presentasi singkat, go go!

Untuk alasan privacy, saya tidak akan menampilkan foto kami dan data-data apapun mengenai si ibu India,

saatnya membuktikan si “wajah laboratorium” juga piawai berkomunikasi,

So, today I am officially 20. I’m so glad that nothing bad happened today, even the weather’s very good too.

As usual, I woke up at 6 am, then I spent most of the day taking classes, then I went home, did assignments, watched a movie, and wrote this, :)

For this birthday, I have a crazy wish: I want to live for more than a thousand years! I want to see how the world changes over a long time, even though on the negative side, no one would recognize me, I’d be in a completely different world. Anyway, it’s just some random crazy stuff that popped up in my mind.

I’m starting a whole new chapter in my life, so I gotta live it well.

I can’t believe I’m being so foolish.

As I’ve told you from the previous post, I’m currently in my last week of being 19. All of a sudden, I started to feel like an old guy, with all the new freshmen coming, and the number 20’s coming, I kinda felt that I wasn’t ready to get older (and yes that’s so foolish).

I spent my time thinking of this question,

“How should I feel of me getting older, 20?”

the most foolish question (maybe). I figured out that I was afraid of getting older, and all the responsibilities, and all the worries about the future. Bad bad me. Then I figured out that the answer’s so simple, I should just be grateful for another year God would give. I shouldn’t dirt my heart with worries, and put faith instead.

So, I’ll make this (every) year’s birthday meaningful,

time to figure out how then…

Bad bad

Okay I’m bad, bad for abandoning the blog for such a long time, so I can’t portrait every interesting moment. In fact, some interesting things happened recently. Quick update, I’m in a new academic year, swarmed by assignments (as usual), and today is definitely Indonesia’s Independence Day, and I’m in my last week of being 19.

The interesting things about today was I went to KOPERTIS 13 to participate in the flag ceremony, and to receive prizes from the country for being good in a Biology competition. God really knows how to provide me with things, in fact I have so many things I’d like to buy in mind, but I should control myself from consumerism.

Back to the interesting ceremony, the flag ceremony during the university’s festival was not the last flag ceremony in my life (as I thought it would be). Today’s ceremony was great, at least I could feel Independence spirit (again).

Another interesting thing about today was the birthday of the church which I goes to. Too bad I can’t go to church today, but I remembered a service several years ago on August 17th, and I still remembered the church jingle (which I think is a good thing).

Anyway, I’ll make sure to post on my birthday, I wouldn’t ruin my birthday by abandoning this blog :)

After questioning many things about myself this several days, I’ve come to a short conclusion: I’m not a very talented person, not in biology, not in writing, not in music. My imagination and creativity aren’t so good. I can’t really express my feeling into words well. I can’t really do lab work perfectly, I often do mistakes and get no good result. All I can do is try again and again, I work hard, I don’t give up, I won’t let my personal feelings and moods get in the way of achieving my dreams. So I’m just persistent, and I hope my persistence is enough to guide me to my dreams.

senior high school trip

Several days ago, me and my friends together visited our senior high school. The old building was okay, it’s now used by junior high school students. I took a peek in my old class, and all the memories came back, I had such a great moments during high school.

We were curious with the new building for senior high school students, so we went inside the new building. The new building felt . . . strange. It’s big and very clean and all, but I didn’t feel belong being there. But with no doubt, the new building’s better the the old building. It has a lot of rooms.

We met teachers, and I saw many new teachers! The teachers was okay, but I forgot to take pictures with them, ah, I didn’t take any picture!

One interesting thing was when we saw into the trophy cabinet, the old simple technology trophy’s still there. I remembered working for the project after we (me, ellena, and ricky) went home from UNIKA ATMAJAYA, at 4 or 5 pm. I also remembered the presentation, as I had my hair dyed, lol!

I’m happy that I can leave something precious to my old senior high school.

I might be coming to the old school again soon, maybe during the edufair, to meet my old friends.

Holiday, for me, is almost over, while it has just started for some of my friends. Time is surely moving unnoticed. I feel kinda happy that the holiday is almost over. Fact is, I can’t wait for me and my friends’ August trip, and the holiday has given me a lot of free time to really rest my brain, and gather a lot of energy for the next academic year. It’s a little too early to say, but I am ready to start my next academic year now, I have all the spirit, woot!

That poor rich girl was my first student, a freshly graduated high school student who was trying to enter a famous public university in Indonesia. I was helping her with the entrance test, as a private biology teacher, my very first experience as a private teacher.

That day, I came to her house. Her house was very big, and she had a lot of servants working for her family. One of her servants allowed me to enter the house, and wait in a wealthy couch. Then she came from upstairs, and we started the lesson. I was teaching very well, I tried to transfer every valuable knowledge that I had. When I got home from teaching, I was exhausted. It was a crazy session, I was talking for 4 hours, giving her every knowledge I had sincerely. My body was aching, but overall the first day went okay.

The following day was a disaster. Before coming to her house, I prepared a lot of materials, wishing I could give her a better lesson than the previous. My dad took me to her house, then he went home. Somehow I had a bad feeling about this, and my feeling were proven to be true. Her servants said that she wasn’t home. I called her, and she said she was outside. I asked her if I was still her teacher, and she said someone else’s coming to her house to teach her biology, in other words, I was fired. So I was disappointed with her for not telling me. It felt sucks because I’ve prepared a lot of valuable materials, and I’ve come to her house. I had to walk my way home until I can find public transportation. As I walked down the street, I called the guy in charge of her, the guy who hired me, and he said I was still her private teacher. Then the girl called me again and asked me whether or not I was still her teacher. That was a stupid question, stupid of you for playing stupid with me, like you didn’t know.

I arrived home, I was super pissed. She wasted my time for preparing her materials, and transportation fee, and thank you for making walk such a long road just to find a public transportation to go home.

She, lied to me that she was outside her house, she was inside, but she tried to avoid me. She even said that someone was going to come and teach her and it was a lie.

What a poor girl, poor rich girl.

Involuntary Labeling

Labeling people is definitely not a right thing to do. But with all the impressions coming, all the feelings, and all the thinking just seem to make it hard not to label someone, especially when that someone did bad things to you over and over again. The mind and the heart are just flooded with bad impressions, and before we know it, we’ve already label that someone in a bad way. This must be an acute stage of ‘labeling disease’. Only knowing that labeling is wrong is never enough. A big effort has to be done to prevent this involuntary labeling. Is this a disease? Or is this the way the mind and the heart work? Just like muscles, some muscles can be controlled under our consciousness, and some work under our unconsciousness, they work involuntarily. Now I realize how broken our human nature is, we even label people unconsciously even though we know that it’s not the right thing to do. Thank God for the forgiveness.

Biotechnology and Religion

Several days ago I found this article from the internet. A very interesting, rather old article about biotechnology as religion. It’s stated there that both biotechnology and religion offers a way to escape death, biotechnology through immortality, and religion through resurrection.

This hard hitting article (congrats Mr, Turner) really made me a lot of thinking about these two different yet complementing things: science and religion. I am currently studying biotechnology and I am also a Christian. I took both molecular biology and theology class. But I’ve never thought about these things. Some people might say that a lot of scientists are atheist, but I’m one of the exceptions.

I fully believe in God as my savior and I believe in science as a gift from God, religion as religion and science as science. I don’t really like the idea of mixing them: science as religion, or maybe religion as science.

It would be interesting to see how things will go after this. Will biotech be able to establish a science of immortality and turn itself as a religion? Or will the faith of Christianity that I’m holding be victorious?

Okay, online dating.

Definition by wikipedia, is “a dating system which allows individuals, couples and groups to make contact and communicate with each other over the Internet, usually with the objective of developing a personal romantic or sexual relationship. Online dating services usually provide unmoderated matchmaking over the Internet, through the use of personal computers or cell phones.”

Well, I think online dating is simply unrealistic and only for desperate people who desperately wanting to get a boyfriend/girlfriend as soon as possible. It’s a very personal opinion though, I’ve never even tried online dating, and I don’t think I will. Well, there’re some success stories of online dating though.

In contrast of online dating, I think online friendship is maybe a little more realistic. Some people say that the closer you get to a friend the stronger the stench you will smell from him/her. I’ll leave it at that, people have different opinions (it’s inevitable). Through online friendship, you will not get as close and smell the stench (maybe). Whatever, this post is very random, lol!

saturday night

What do you usually do on Saturday night? Hang out with friends?

I usually stay at home to do my assignments and plan my schedule for the next week (yes, I am a boring person). If I don’t have any assignments then I usually read random things on the internet, like scientific articles, but I seldom have a free Saturday night like that.

Hanging out with friends on Saturday night would be fun, but not in Indonesia (I think). I don’t think Indonesians (or maybe only Chinese descendants in Indonesia like me, or is it just ME?) love the culture of wasting money for relationship bonding, especially when there’s no good place to hang out, and good places to hang out have pricey price (so Chinese, never waste money on something unworthy, 浪费钱！). I prefer to stay at home and walk my road to my BIG dreams step by step. I wouldn’t hurt to hang out sometimes though, only when I am super bored and tired of studying.

Hopefully this post will inspire people to study more and use their Saturday nights and money wisely.

Influenza

I hate influenza! It’s very infectious, and it attacks susceptible person anytime. Guess what, it attacked me last Saturday. The worst part of influenza is it ruins my schedule. Saturday has always been a productive day for me to do my assignments, but the previous Saturday I had to rest all day because the medication made me feel very drowsy. The best parts of influenza are it’s not lethal and it doesn’t last long. I am healthy now, don’t ever return and ruin my schedule again, please.

This is REAL bad, I am playing MMORPG again. I started a week ago, and now I’m bored of it already. One negative effect from this MMORPG during holiday is it keeps me away from this blog, lol.

A lot of people are scared of getting addicted to MMORPG, and scared that the MMORPG will ruin their school or work performance. I am an exception. I am not scared at all with MMORPG, because no MMORPG can satisfy me and by the time school starts, I always uninstall my MMORPG and focus on my study. Academic achievement is my kryptonite, lol, just kidding. I just think that I can control myself from games pretty well. Priority, that’s the keyword :)

Speaking of priority, my current top priority is getting as much experience as I can in the laboratory, and of course finishing my writing assignments well. Blogging comes after that. Then I’m off to holiday with my friends, hooray!

Seperti yang telah saya beritahukan sebelumnya, saat ini saya berada dalam masa liburan “panjang” dari kuliah. Begitu banyak rencana-rencana yang sudah saya susun untuk mengisi liburan kali ini, seperti meningkatkan kemampuan saya dalam bekerja di laboratorium, membaca buku, bermain game, dan salah satunya aktif menulis di blog ini. Sayang sekali koneksi internet saya pada liburan ini malah bermasalah.

Beberapa waktu yang lalu salah satu dosen saya mengirimkan referensi untuk mendukung penulisan artikel saya, ukurannya tidak terlalu besar, sekitar 10MB saja. Saya sangat antusias untuk mengunduh dan segera membacanya. Saya sangat ingin membuat kemajuan dalam penulisan ini. Entah mengapa kecepatan unduh saya sangat-sangat lambat, hanya beberapa bit per detik, dan saya tidak bisa membuka email saya pada tampilan standar, singkat kata saya kaget dan cukup kesal.

Semoga koneksi internet yang lambat ini tidak berlangsung lama, karena aktivitas-aktivitas saya benar-benar terhambat olehnya =/

Dalam beberapa waktu ke depan saya akan terlibat dalam proses penulisan artikel yang akan dimasukkan ke dalam sebuah buku. Lucunya, saya merasa sangat kesulitan menggunakan bahasa yang mudah dimengerti orang-orang pada umumnya untuk menjelaskan berbagai macam istilah ilmiah khususnya dalam bidang biologi. Ah andaikan saya memiliki talenta Shakespeare seperti beberapa teman saya @yellohelle, silahkan dicek dan dikonfirmasi sendiri.

Meskipun saya tidak memiliki talenta itu, tapi saya akan tetap berusaha menulis dengan baik. Saya telah merancang kerangka tulisan saya secara keseluruhan dan menuliskan semua checklist yang harus saya perhatikan dalam menulis kali ini. Dalam tahap-tahap awal ini saja saya telah mengalami kesulitan, tapi percayalah saya bukan tipikal manusia yang mudah menyerah dan pasrah pada nasib tanpa berusaha terlebih dahulu.

Beruntung juga saya sempat mendapatkan tambahan pelajaran menulis dengan baik dari kursus bahasa mandarin yang saya ambil. Pelajaran yang diberikan dari kursus cenderung mendasar tapi saya rasa penting dan akan sangat berguna dalam proses penulisan.

Salah satu usaha saya dalam meningkatkan kemampuan menulis adalah dengan membaca majalah ilmiah, dan tentunya juga menuangkan ide-ide saya yang agak random ke dalam blog ini (maaf sekali posting saya seringkali tidak penting dan tidak berkualitas, setidaknya apa yang saya lakukan bermanfaat, minimal untuk diri saya sendiri). Bicara soal penulis majalah ilmiah, saya menemukan dua orang penulis majalah ilmiah yang saya rasa menulis dengan sangat-sangat baik, sayangnya saya belum bisa memberikan tautan di sini karena masalah koneksi internet =/.

Sepertinya perjalanan saya dalam menulis masih panjang, dan saya akan membutuhkan banyak masukan-masukan yang membangun,

welcoming my holiday

The looooooong never-ending study rally has finally come to and end, yes, I am in my holiday now. This semester’s crazy! Things went so unexpectedly. During the beginning of the semester, I remembered being busy with one of the senate’s events, which was DISCOVERY2, a science and mathematics competition for high school students. Then I was busy with all of my assignments and mid-term. Following the mid-term, I was busy with the ON-MIPA, then my final-term. During this semester, I met a lot of new people and I also had to say good bye to some. Everything happened just like that, I can only thank God for everything.

Oh yeah, I also want to thank a lot of people: my family, my best friends, my lecturers, everyone in the SMFSM 2010/2011, my classmates, and everyone else who helped me to grow, to change the way I think, I just can’t thank enough. I’ll continue to grow into a better person in my own way (:

And for this holiday, I’m going to rest hard, play hard, lol!

Biology Olympiad

First post in May 2011!

So yesterday was the closing ceremony of ON-MIPA (Olimpiade Nasional – Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam), a national science and math competition. I participated in the biology competition. Me and my friends (4 biologist and several mathematicians) together participated in the competition. Three biologist (including me) and 2 mathematicians made it to the last selection. Together we represented kopertis 13 (our region). We wanted to do our best, and bring glory to our university.

The competition was intense. The questions were awesome, I absolutely couldn’t do all of them. But I really hoped that I could get the medal. I studied, and I prayed to God,

“God, please give me the gold medal, I really want it. If not, please give me the silver medal, or at least the bronze medal. On second thought, God please give me anything as You please, please give me anything that I deserve…”

I did my best and I didn’t care about the result anymore.

Then a miracle happened, they announced that I got the bronze medal. I can only be grateful to God, and also thankful to the lecturers who taught me a lot of things, my seniors who studied with me, my friends and classmates who supported me, my family who supported me, and to everyone who congratulated me.

An important lesson I get from the competition is I still have a lot of things to learn. So I will keep learning to be better, and also lean more to God, without Him, I am simply nothing.

My struggle’s not over yet, I’m having a big advanced microbiology test tomorrow, a DNA recombinant technology test and a bioinformatics quiz on Thursday, and finally, I’m having my final-test next week. So I think I have to work harder!!

2011 is moving very quickly, and now I’m in the middle of April. I can’t believe of things which have happened so far. They’re full of surprises, very unexpected. Some are sweet, some are very tiring. There may be a lot of activities, and they make me forget about every commitment I’ve made in the beginning of the year. Anyway, there’s no point of making new year resolutions if someone couldn’t remember and try to achieve them during the year. Skipping Classes

“So, today is such a beautiful day, the sun shines so brightly, a good day to hang out!”

I remembered I saying that several days ago. In fact, today is also a beautiful day, with the bright sun and all, and I don’t want to “hang out”.

Today marked the first time of me skipping a class. I have to go to Jakarta for an important issue. I really really hate skipping class. I’ve never skipped a class before since my first year in the college for whatever reason, but this time, I HAVE TO, because the head of my major asked me to. I may sound rather crazy, but yes, as you think, I am a nerd, I am scared that if I skip my class, I would get left behind, and I have to catch up with everything, and maybe some people dislike me because of it.

When I skipped the class, I felt like whoa, I actually did it! Then I felt kinda like a bad guy, =p

I have to skip another class next week for the same issue, it’ll make me feel worse, but that’s the way of commitment, that’s just the way things are anyway.

So I hope next week would be the last time for me to skip classes for at least this semester,

my least favorite thing in the university is rivalry. I thought university students should care more about themselves, instead of sticking their noses on others problems. I thought every student should have found his/her own individuality during high school. Just be careful with those who haven’t, because they will compare everything with you, and the worst thing is they make you his/her rival, and you don’t want to be his/her rival because you’ve realized your own individuality. When things like these happen, you’ll feel like hell!

Saya rasa saya ada di puncak kepenatan masa-masa kuliah: saya mau lulus secepatnya.

Minggu ini adalah minggu ujian tengah semester, dan besok saya harus menghadapi ujian mikrobiologi lanjutan. Lelah juga rasanya belajar setiap hari. Saya baru sadar bahwa semenjak saya memasuki semester 4 ini, saya benar-benar seperti robot yang kurang bersenang-senang. Senyum yang sebenarnya nyaris hilang.

Jika dipikir-pikir lagi, saya takut untuk cepat lulus. Saya takut akan fakta bahwa saya akan bertambah tua setiap detiknya, dan cepat atau lambat, saya pasti akan meninggalkan masa-masa dewasa muda ini, memasuki fase dewasa, dengan kegiatan yang monoton, kerja setiap hari. Saya belum siap menyandang sebutan “bapak” dari orang-orang.

kelas teologi pagi kemarin menngingatkan saya akan bobroknya natur manusia, natur yang egois. beberapa waktu sebelum menerima kuliah mengenai bahasan ini saya dihadapkan kepada sifat egois manusia yang sangat menjengkelkan. saya kesal.

my simple morning story

Today I made a wrong decision in the morning. My alarm rang at 5.30 AM, but I decided to sleep for a little longer, I woke up at 6.00 AM. Usually, I went to campus on 6.20 AM, but today, I planned to go to campus on 6.30 AM. Just when I’m about to finish preparation, it’s raining heavily, =/ I decided to wait a little longer until the rain stopped (hopefully). The rain did actually stop, I was kinda happy, but I’m kinda off schedule, it’s 6.35 AM. I took my key, and opened the gate, just when I was about to leave the house, my key was stuck in the key hole, urgh =/ I wasted about 5 minute pulling my key out of the hole. I can’t go to the minimarket to buy mineral water (just info, I always go to a minimarket near my house to buy mineral water everyday). I rode the public transportation. About 20 meters away from my house, someone familiar got in the same public transportation as I was. He’s my old senior high school friend. I greeted him, and I remembered something, something very important which I can’t share it here, I learned something from him. Then I got all spirited!

Then again when I saw the traffic, I was down again. I knew I would be very late today, cause and effect, I picked the wrong decision in the morning. I had theology class in the morning. The docent was very kind, he tolerated coming late, but if I came late, it’d be my first time =/ I wouldn’t feel so good about that.

Somehow, I arrived in the class on time, and I managed to buy a bottle of mineral water too before the class started, weird.

I thought today was a bad day, my mood was bad, but God really knows how to make me feel spirited and happy again, I decided to be happier for the whole day. I can’t share the important lesson from my old friend yet, but I will,

Beberapa hari yang lalu saya menghapus empat akun email saya. Sebelumnya, saya memiliki lima buah akun email aktif dengan tujuan penggunaan yang berbeda-beda: dua akun khusus saya gunakan untuk messenger, dua akun untuk jejaring sosial, dan satu akun sisanya untuk surat-menyurat. Alasan penghapusan sangat sederhana, saya pusing mengatur surat-surat kiriman kontak-kontak saya.

Sebelumnya, saya pernah memberitahukan kontak-kontak saya untuk mengirimkan surat mereka ke satu akun, dan jangan ke akun-akun lainnya, karena akun-akun yang lain jarang saya cek, dan hanya saya gunakan untuk menampung notifikasi jejaring sosial ataupun untuk messenger. Faktanya, kontak-kontak saya mengirimkan surat-surat berisi dokumen-dokumen penting ke akun-akun email yang tidak saya fungsikan untuk surat-menyurat, sampai saya kelelahan dan kepusingan karena harus memeriksa lima akun email setiap kali saya online.

Sekarang saya telah menghapus empat akun email yang lain, dan mempertahankan satu saja untuk surat-menyurat, jejaring sosial, dan messenger. Sebelumnya saya harus menonaktifkan notifikasi jejaring-jejaring sosial agar tidak mengirimkan surat ke email saya. Saya juga harus kembali menambahkan kontak messenger saya, karena alamat email messenger saya sudah berubah. Walaupun banyak yang harus saya lakukan untuk ini, saya merasa tidak menyesal. Saya merasa lebih praktis.

Dalam waktu dekat saya juga akan mengganti nomor telepon genggam saya, karena sinyal operator penyedia layanan telepon genggam yang saya gunakan ini sangat lemah jika dibandingkan dengan operator lainnya (sinyal tergolong kuat bila dilihat dari sisi tarifnya).

My internet connection’s acting lately! For this reason, I quitted playing another MMORPG, named DWO aka Dynasty Warrior Online. Too bad, I’ve made some “good” friends there. The positive thing is my study won’t be disturbed by MMORPG.

Back to the main topic, my internet connection’s acting so lame lately, and I’m getting tired of it. I’ve to wait for about 10s to open encrypted.google.com (that’s very lame indeed).

Not only my internet connection, the situation got worse because the campus’ internet and my blackberry’s internet were also lame. It’s very hard to connect to the campus wifi, and when I got connected, the connection would be disconnected the next 5 or 10 minutes! Nothing much I can do with the campus internet, but for my blackberry, I think I should change my number, =/

Today when I ate at hoka-hoka bento, I saw some kids was having fun during their friend’s birthday party. I didn’t really know whether they’re really-really happy or not, but at the moment I knew that they had no concern in their mind. They just wanted to play and have fun, as friends!

Nothing really interests me in particular, but I envy them. It’s really-really hard to find a good quality friend these days, especially in the university. Everybody has their own motives and purposes. Just be smart and avoid conflict as much as possible, because:

my old friendster account

several days ago I log in to friendster. funny, no one is checking their friendster anymore, the world is changing indeed, lol, no need to reconfirm about it.

I checked on my old profile, my old photos, and there’re so many old pictures, mostly my junior high school memories. I have no special feelings about it, everything just seemed so normal.

Then I decided to deactivate my old friendster account, together with all of the photos there, simply because none of my friends are using it.

For a second I thought, just because none of them are using it, doesn’t mean that I have to delete it right? Then again I thought that my account’s kinda useless now, and it’s not a suitable place to save my memories (including my photos and comments).

Maybe one day my facebook account will end up in the same way as my friendster account, and maybe this blog too.

saving memories aren’t a good reason to keep these things, to me. memories are sweet, indeed, even a bitter memory in the present can be a sweet memory in the future. just be careful, too much sweets will get you diabetes, lol! I should find a more proper place to save my memories, so good bye my old friendster account, I will return when I find you useful (perhaps networking in the future), until then,

old story: the cheaters

before writing this, I was thinking whether I should write this or not, well, here it is now. this post’s about an old cliché story, the cheaters.

one day before the final test, you studied over and over again to prove the lecturer that you are serious in his/her subject, and to prove that you are worthy enough to pass his/her class, or to prove the lecturer that you deserve to get A on the subject. on the final test, some of your classmates cheated (and cheating is illegal). you know you don’t have to think about other people’s negative side, but it’s just . . . annoying.

I was in that situation on my final test week. I wonder why the cheaters can cheat so easily. don’t they feel guilty after cheating? I think they have taken character development class with me on the previous semester, but why did they still do it? I cannot accept this, somehow.

if you’re in my position, will you think about this? maybe some of you will just ignore this because you accept the way things are, and maybe some of you will think about this because you’re worried about the future of your country bla bla bla or other reasons (in the end, you want them to stop cheating).

I tried to accept things, but the fact that I am writing this means that I can’t, that’s just not me and writing is the only thing I can do. I guess cheating and I will never be friends, ever.

pernikahan

beberapa waktu yang lalu gw baru menghadiri dua buah kondangan: dosen dan sepupu gw. mungkin karena datang ke dua kondangan ini, atau mungkin ada alasan lain (entahlah) gw jadi kepikiran mengenai pernikahan gw nanti gimana, mau di mana, menu makanannya apa, undang berapa banyak orang, sewa WO yang mana, dan detil-detil acara pernikahan lainnya (tidak termasuk calon mempelai wanita ya =p, jujur masalah yang itu sih susah kalo direncanakan).

hal gila yang terlintas di pikiran gw adalah gw mau nikahan di luar negri, dengan wedding singer JJ Lin (amin), dan dengan beberapa bahasa (inggris, mandarin, indonesia?). saudara-saudara di indonesia pasti perlu penerjemah (kenapa jadi serasa sunday chapel ya pake penerjemah segala) kalo sampai nikahannya nanti pakai bahasa asing, apalagi orang tua, dan generasi-generasi di atas gw.

nikahan di luar negri, gw sempet mikir mau ngundang semua sanak saudara dan teman-teman ke negara tersebut, dan menginap di hotel mewah (sempet kepikiran buat menanggung semua biaya tiket dan penginapan). duit dari mana ya semua itu?

kalo dipikir secara akal manusia kenapa serasa mustahil ya? gw sih sekarang meng-amin-amin-kan saja khayalan dan mimpi-mimpi ini, =p

planning sih pasti ada, jarak dekat: mengejar IP 4, meraih gelar s1, s2, s3, post-doc.

jarak jauh: menang nobel kali ya? atau buat penemuan besar lalu dipatenkan? kalo sampai berhasil niscaya masalah keuangan ga akan bermasalah (buat nikahan).

it is 10:28 PM and i am studying for my final exam on monday.

i may sound stupid but this is my first time drinking coffee for exams. i decided to study till moring for the first time, hahaha!

several days ago i was so down and bored. i knew i have to study hard but i lost my spirit. thank you to a friend who encouraged and supported me, now i am full of spirit again, and i decided to give it my all for the final exam (:

i also remembered my friends who didn’t go to college for reasons, i feel like i am very lucky that i can study in the college, and i shouldn’t waste this opportunity, i feel like i have to carry their dreams too!

karena satu alasan, saya tidak begitu bisa menggunakan minggu tenang ini dengan efektif. biasanya saya sudah menguasai materi 100% di minggu tenang, tapi sekarang belum. saya hanya me-review apa saja yang sudah saya pelajari (kecuali untuk beberapa mata kuliah yang memang sudah saya pelajari hingga 100%). benar-benar tidak sesuai dengan target saya mula-mula.

faktanya saya harus mulai bertanggung jawab dengan diri saya yang tidak bisa memenuhi target mula-mula (atau mungkin target saya yang terlalu tinggi?). hutang-hutang saya ini akan saya lunasi secepatnya.

saya sangat yakin dan percaya minggu tenang dan minggu ujian akan berlalu dengan sangat cepat, dan minggu liburan akan berlalu sangat lambat (ini usaha untuk men-sugesti diri saya sendiri).

final test is coming, i really have to spend more time in the library, lol!

we should spend more time for studying on weekends, and when the final test is coming, we should “increase and increase” our studying intensity.

i didn’t study for my final test this weekend,

long story short,

this weekend is such a hectic weekend, i met so many great people in a big campus event~

i abandoned all of my assignments for three days, but i got another important lesson about organization.

organization is a place to study many practical things,

for me, in an organization, when you stop studying and think that you’re better than others, you will stop growing.

the same thing implies for your academic knowledge, and everything.

so, i think we shouldn’t stop learning about everything (:

i missed youtube

it takes a lot of time to finish my assignments

and now i hardly have free time to watch youtube

this semester so far is the heaviest semester i’ve ever had

the lessons are not that hard, but the assignments are too much to handle (TMTH)

mouse in the cinema

i went to the cinema today to watch resident evil after life.

here’s the story.

i was sitting on my seat, the light had been turned off, and they started rolling the movie. before the movie started, they notified us to stop hijacking the film. suddenly they turned on the light, and two officer walked in. one of them brought two sticks or whatsoever. the other officer said, “there, seat B1.” wow, everyone seemed shocked. i thought they wanted to capture someone who tried to hijack the movie! the way he talked, and those sticks (i can’t see it clearly), do they wanted to catch the hijacker?

then someone asked, “what happened?”

the officer said, “there’s a mouse here.”

the girls were screaming.

the officer said, “don’t worry, it’s dead, we’re here to clean it.”

and i realized that those sticks were a broom and a dustpan.

. . .

okay i was overdramatizing things, lol!

anyway the film was good.

lectio divina

hello guys (:

have you ever heard about lectio divina? if you are a catholic, you should know about it.

well, who cares about the religion? lectio divina is a good way to learn to be a better and better person each and every day.

lectio divina is when you read bible or other texts with four distinct steps:

1. lectio –> which is reading the bible over and over again

2. meditaio –> meditate, ask yourselves: “what do i learn from the text?”

3. oratio –> pray, so we can live what we have learned from the text

4. contemplatio –> be silent for a moment, and thank God for all the lesson we have learned.

simple right?

i thank theology class for teaching me how to do lectio divina. anyway, if you are interested in lectio divina you should check this out. i’m not an expert about lectio divina, so you guys should get a better information from a more trustworthy source.

so i have abandoned my blog for more than two weeks now. i’ve been very busy with my college life lately.

anyway, the other day i went to a 超级市场 in Jakarta with my family: father, mother and sister. then we’re having supper in Mangga Besar. this place is full of chinese and somehow i don’t really like the situation there. even though i am chinese blooded too, i think this place is just over chinese, lol!

i was ordering the food while an old geezer suddenly gave me a massage from behind with a strange shaped massager. i was super shocked when he gave me a massage. he said i should give him IDR 1000 or 2000 for the massage, and i was like what the….! he was forcing me to gave him money. what a negative attitude! what a rude man!

well, i gave him IDR 1000 and ask him to leave. i just wish i wouldn’t be a rude old geezer like him in the future.

i didn’t know how’s his life. and it’s not about the money. he might be poor and all alone in this world, no family, no relatives. but i think he should’ve asked me first before he gave me a massage. conditions may be harsh, but never blame conditions. never blame God. just reflect yourselves.

i have no regret giving him money though. we should all be better each day. i will pay more attention to my surroundings and give money to people who deserve the money. and he shouldn’t do rude things like that, hopefully.

anyway i’m just writing, the decision is yours.

do not say you’ve never met any jerk in your whole life, everyone will meet jerks, sooner or later in their life.

one of the most obnoxious jerk-type i’ve ever met is the type who loves to talk behind people’s back. and you heard everything that he/she said.

actually, often people who talk behind your back are jealous of you for some reason and will do all they can to make you looked bad in others point of view. since people are not perfect,those jerks will always find negative sides of you and talk behind your back. that’s completely gross and obnoxious!

it’s not like i am perfect either. i might sound like a jerk right now, lol! well, i just want to support other people who are helpless, and pissed because jerks keep talking behind their backs.

we should really accept people as the way they are. no one is perfect, and perfection lies in imperfection!

ps: talking is easy, but i sometimes i also find it hard to accept people as the way they are. i asked why do people do this. what are you doing?! but the most important thing is to realize that we need to accept them as the way they are. every human is processed individually, just believe they will grow. or be vocal and tell them, but i’d rather not.
